ALBATROSS GOLF LEAGUE AT ALHAMA SIGNATURE COURSE

2010-10-02 14:23:49
For the September Albatross Golf League meeting we had 41 golfers who travelled down to the Alhama Signature course not far from Mazarron. Despite there being no directions from the motorway, everyone found their way within an hour or so from the Orihuela Costa area.
This is the only course in the area designed personally by Jack Nicklaus and you could certainly see the paw prints of the Great Bear everywhere - rolling fairways, impressive bunkers, swathes of water, and lightening fast undulating greens, all in immaculate condition - and the feedback from all of the players was very positive.

The only negative comment was that there was no signposting from green to tee which sometimes made it difficult to work out where you were going next.  Despite this, no-one had any trouble negotiating the journey from tee to green and one person in particular made his way round most impressively. Peter Deaves, making his debut in the competition, carded a brilliant 42 points, five ahead of his closest rival Richard Riddall, while overall individual League leader kept up his fine run of form with 36 points. On what is a difficult course a further ten players all beat 30 points and are to be congratulated.

Captain of Vega Baja team in the Garay Cup 2010

Monday, 20 September 2010 17:20
The Vega Baja Premier Golf League four-year reign as holders of the Garay Cup ended when The Costa Blanca North League took the trophy in the rain. On Friday 17th September at Las Colinas Golf Resort , Vega Baja Premier Golf League entertained Costa Blanca News Golf League in the annual competition between the representative teams of each league for the Garay Cup trophy. Non-playing captain Peter Deaves and his Vega Baja Premier League team. resplendent in their new team shirts, supplied by Kameeleon Embroidery, welcomed the Costa Blanca North League team and their captain Tony Carroll, to Las Colinas Golf Resort.
The Garay Cup started in 2005 at Alicante Golf with a win for Costa Blanca this followed by four successive wins for the Vega Baja Premier Golf League, before today. Following this brief history of the event SeƱor Garay presented the Garay Cup to winning Captain Tony Carroll who thanked the Vega Baja Premier Golf League for arranging such a good venue and more importantly for his team’s effort in ensuring the Cup was going home after a four-year absence. VGPGL Captain Peter Deaves, said that he should be humbled by Tony’s kind comments and the Costa Blanca’s victory, but Vega Baja Golf League do not do humble and that the Garay Cup is only on loan for twelve months. He congratulated Tony on his team’s victory and looked forward to putting matters right next year. This year Manolo Garay also sponsored two Nearest the Pins and a Longest Drive prizes. Both leagues now look forward to their respective seasons and to the 2011 playing of the Garay Cup at a venue of the Costa Blanca’s North Leagues' choosing.

Vega Baja Premier League Winners 2009 - 2010

El Valle Golf Resort – 5th March 2010“A” Division
With this the final “A” Division matches of the season, there were still items to be settled, but not for who was going to be the Champions, this had already been secured by Katie Reilly.
But KR and captain Peter Deaves wanted to go with their tails held high as they took on La Manga North and equally the La manga team wanted a good result to edge away from the relegation zone.
Well it was a close fought match and the result was a two all draw and the bonus points going to Katie Reilly to cement their leadership, the best scores were from KR team members Rob Neil and Paul Rooney with 34 and 33 points respectively.
This result for La Manga North certainly helped their cause but they need a good result from San Miguel against Club 25 to make sure they were not in danger of the drop.

Clydegrove International Bar Competition

 2006-01-07

Inaugural winners, Katie Reilly's
There's a new and very handsome Clydegrove International Bar Competition Golf Trophy.   This was competed for on Wednesday 28th December 2005 at La Marquesa for the first time. The trophy is sponsored by Alan Peters Golf Tours who was unfortunately out of the country when this first match for the trophy was played.
The format for the game is 12 players from each bar playing against each other, two against two, recording Stableford points against their handicaps. The scores of each of the 12 players in the team are added together and the team with the highest combined score is the winner on the day. Not only is the magnificent trophy to be won but a prize was given to the golfer with the highest individual score and prizes were donated for golfers who got nearest the pin on the par threes,  plus a further prize to the golfer who had the longest drive on the eighteenth hole.
The first two teams to compete for the trophy were Shandon Bells, Villamartin, - their Captain was John Stephenson - and Katie Reilly's, Rioja - their Captain, the owner, Jim Hough. The match was played in the morning at La Marquesa in a friendly but competitive spirit with some high scores being recorded.
We were all pleased for Peter Deaves who recorded the highest score on the day with 40 points; considering the buggy breakdown he encountered, well done Peter! Trevor Hough who gives his all in the matches with long, long drives, had to pack in on the thirteenth hole with a bad back.
The scores were very close on the day - only six points separated the two teams.
Trophy winners:  Katie Reilly's 370 points. Shandon Bells 364 points.
Clydegrove Golf who sponsored the trophy also donated a free green fee for the highest scoring player on the day. This was Peter Deaves of Katie Reilly's with 40 points. Bottles of Christmas cheer were donated by Shandon Bells and Katie Reilly's for the players getting closest to flag on the par threes with their drives.
5th hole - John Williams. 11th hole - Eddie Wall. 15th hole - Shirley Cain. 17th hole - Spencer Williams.
The bottle of Christmas cheer prize for the longest drive on the 18th hole was donated by Drivers Bar, Villamartin.

Katie Reilly's Pub Golf Society

Peter Deaves and Tony Brookes.
I don't know what it is about La Marquesa Golf Club, Ciudad Quesada, but every time we book our Society game there, we always, I stress always, encounter problems with regard to the hire of golf buggies. We are told on arrival they have none - or we booked less than those required - and each time a confirmation fax has to be shown stating the correct requirement and not what they want us to have.
This was exactly the same on our Captain's Day 4th August. Fewer buggies offered than booked, meaning some players had to walk the course even though they didn't want to. Some players went home again without playing and were very annoyed considering some had travelled quite a distance to be at the course for an 8.30am start.

Apart from all the above, twenty players - some walking and others in buggies - put up with the scorching temperatures and played an eighteen hole medal competition, which many like myself agree is the true game of golf. Every hole has to be played out and completed.

After the match we all went back to Katie Reilly's for a super meal of varying choice prepared by Barry and his charming wife before the presentation of the new fabulous trophy called the Chloe Cup, kindly donated by our Captain Peter Deaves, and named after his daughter.
Winner of the Chloe Medal Trophy: Tony Brookes, Past Captain for two years, net score 70, Second: Eddie Wall
We had four nearest the pin winners on the par three holes.
5th hole - Tony Brookes - 11th Pat Whiten - 15th Con O'Sullivan - 17th Eddie Wall. A further prize was given to the player with the longest drive on the 18th hole won by our Captain, Peter Deaves while the best guest score went to John Peters.
